The Virgin Prostitute

The prominent damp dusty air at the busiest roundabout of Goshen Township makes Dolapo sneeze a million time whenever she jogs pass in the evening. The view at the juncture was always interesting as it mixes corporate and leisure sight. Just on one side of the roundabout was a set of four banks. The design and the red color roof of MoneyHorse bank as it is boldly written on the tall building made it the most noticeable of the banks and from it smartly dressed staffs came out after closing for the day.‘I will like to own a bank’, she said to herself as she slowly jogged pass the bank. Few paces away were the other business hubs of the town: There was a big shopping plaza, a Viewing Centre, a sport bet shop, two barbing salons, a pool collection office, an event hall and a bar on one side. Here is where most social events and after-work relaxation take place. People like retired civil servants, exhausted schoolteachers, Police officers and businessmen come there to relax, some with their aristos to enjoy the evening. It is always an entirely different view from what is obtainable on the bank side of the roundabout. There is usually a big difference in the countenance of these two sets of people. The bank staffs do look exhausted and rather hungry while those ones on the other side seem contented. Dolapo herself look exhausted and unsatisfied. She was lost in thought of her life again as soon as she jogged pass the busy areas.

‘You and this your useless wakawaka, instead of you to get a job na chicken scatter leg u dey do up and down abi’? Mr. Makinwa yelled. ‘Let’s see if your loads will remain in this house the next time you flout my order’! He threatened. Dolapo didn’t utter a word but walked into her room anxiously. She was happy she had already cooked as the Shobowales were coming over for dinner.

Both families visit one another often especially for dinners. On one of these visits at the Shobo’s (as he is often called by Mr. Makinwa), a discussion on the difficulties in raising children nowadays ensued and Dolapo was made to contribute. She was able to talk about the pressure she faced attending a public University where sex appeal was rampant and how she has not been able to get a job because of her resistance to sex from prospective employers. ‘I was able to scale through most of the pressures sha, at least I graduated a virgin’, she said nonchalantly facing her plate of food. At the surprise of hearing this, Mr. Shobowale promised her that he would help her secure her dream job of working in a bank in Canada where his younger brother is a shareholder. This promise got Dolapo a step closer to her dream of owning a bank and the joy made her open her diary she hadn’t written anything in for months because of  her routinely boring life since she had not been able to get a job after her graduation two years ago. ‘Finally I get to leave this horrible place and live my real life’ she thought to herself

She hurriedly removed her sweaty clothes as she got to her room and walked into the bathroom. She was sad but had an expression of excitement on her face. This was the second time she would be going into the shower with her phone and headset. The first time she did, her bath took almost two hours.

The loud volume of her headset deafened her totally and won’t allow her hear the incessant knocks on the door. This was her father calling on her to come and set the table as the Shobo’s were around already. Angrily, her father barged into the bathroom after lots of effort to reach out to her proved abortive. He thought something bad has happened to his first daughter. This made a bang noise in the whole house that even their neighbors heard. Mr. Shobo and his wife sprung up from the dining chair to go check what was happening inside.

The devilish Dr.Dre headset and the engrossment of what she was watching on her phone never allowed her to hear the loudest noise in the neighborhood in years. Her father just stood at the entrance half dead and empty at what he was seeing. ‘This should be a dream’, he muttered. Her sisters rushed in too to know what caused the loudest noise of the century.

Mr. Shobowale’s entrance made a shadow cast on Dolapo’s phone and she looked up only to realize the whole family was just at the door watching her. She was shocked; in fact everyone was shocked except for her kid sisters who won’t just understand what was going on.

Her phone slipped from her hand uncontrollably as she stood up but was held by the cord of the headset. A metallic object fell from her thigh area on the shining white bathroom tiles; they all looked down at the humming object. She was extremely embarrassed and the thought of the earth opening to swallow her filled her head that she forgot she was still naked in front of the whole family.
